Today, in 3 minutes or less, you'll learn starting a business can create the following for you:

  1. Better flexibility and balance: by designing a career that fits around family life.
  2. Unlimited financial potential: building a successful business can deliver incredible results compared to the limitations of traditional employment.
  3. Personal fulfilment: personal growth and doing what you love can have many flow-on effects.

Some recent conversations have left me reflecting on why a mum would choose business ownership over more traditional forms of employment. Yes, starting a business can be challenging in so many ways. Such challenges include putting up precious capital and resources, working many hours, taking on the risk of things not working out, being isolated from working alone, and feeling overwhelmed. I don't want to downplay any of this at all. These are all very valid considerations!

But, oh, business ownership can be so exciting and rewarding.

I would love to explore the benefits of starting a business in today's newsletter.

For starters, it offers fantastic flexibility. Business ownership can give you the flexibility you crave when juggling all the commitments and workload that mum life entails. Control over your work schedule means you can:

  • Balance your family time and work commitments better.
  • Set your hours, which allows you to work around your children's school schedules, activities, and needs.
  • Be more present for important moments you don't want to miss, such as school events, doctor's appointments, and after-school activities.
  • Make business decisions that align with your family's needs and values, such as prioritising family health or opting for less stressful projects.
  • Decide how much or how little you want to grow your business, allowing you to manage it according to your family's changing needs.
  • Be there for your kids during school holidays and sick days, flexing your work hours up and down to be more available.

You can prioritise your personal needs, too. You can build gym sessions or exercise into your working week. You can get some housework or errands out of the way through the week, freeing up your weekend. You can schedule personal appointments. You can also rest—read a book, take a nap, go for a walk, or sit in a cafe and have a coffee! You don't answer to anyone.

Business ownership allows you to do what you love. There is nothing better than aligning your work with your passions and values. You can express yourself however you want, get creative, and have fun. You can make the contributions you want through what you put into the world.

Running your own show is easier in many ways, and you can enjoy a better lifestyle. Many businesses can be run from home or require minimal travel, saving you time and reducing stress related to commuting. You can create a workspace that works for you and brings you joy, such as working in more casual clothes or setting up a cosy space, enhancing productivity and job satisfaction.

Your income potential can become limitless. Owning a successful business can provide your family with additional income and financial stability. Of course, this is the biggest challenge, but there are so many examples of people who have had a go and worked hard and have been able to generate solid and reliable income.

Building and growing a business can be deeply satisfying, giving you a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Running a business helps you develop diverse skills, from management to marketing, which can be personally rewarding and professionally valuable. Entrepreneurship can boost your confidence and belief in yourself in so many ways! Doors to networking opportunities with other professionals and parents can also be opened, creating a supportive community around you.

Business ownership provides an incredible role-modelling opportunity for your children. Being a business owner demonstrates initiative, drive, hard work, and dedication. You can set a fantastic example - showing your kids that you can chase your dreams AND be there for theirs. As your children grow older, they may become interested in joining your business or learning from your experiences, further cementing the beautiful legacy you leave.

A final thought: is 9-5 employment ever that secure anyway? We often see our more traditional careers as dependable, but things can change quickly, and you are always at the mercy of someone who decides your future.

Remember, mama, you don't have to choose between being a great mum and having a fulfilling career. You can have both - on your terms! Here's to going from being a stressed-out working mum to a fulfilled mumpreneur by creating a business that works for you. Don't let fear hold you back from the amazing entrepreneurial adventure that awaits.

I would love to know your thoughts, too.
