Today, in 5 minutes or less, you'll learn:

  1. Ten tips for making a start with a website for your business.
  2. Creating a website is doable, even if you are not tech-savvy.
  3. Key elements you should focus on as a starting point that you can refine as you go.

Creating your first website may feel daunting. Without a website, your brilliant business ideas will likely stay hidden. You're missing out on potential clients, sales, and the chance to showcase your brilliance 24/7.

But with the right mindset and tools, it becomes a manageable and rewarding process. You've got this - and I'm here to help you realise your business dream! Whether you're building your site to sell products, offer services, or establish your online presence, here are some practical tips to help you get started.

1. Just Get It Live – Refine as You Go

Perfection is not the goal when you're starting. The most crucial step is getting your website live, even if it could be better. You can (and should) continuously refine and optimise your site over time, but don't wait to make it perfect before launching. Progress is better than perfection!

2. Do as Much as You Can Yourself

The more you can handle yourself, the more control you'll have over your website—and you'll save on costs, too! While getting help when needed is great, learning how to manage your website will give you greater flexibility and independence as your business grows.

3. Understand That It Takes Time

Building a website—and growing an online business—doesn't happen overnight. You'll need to invest time, especially if this is your first attempt. Be patient and give yourself grace as you learn the ropes. Remember, it may also take time for your website to generate income, but persistence is vital.

4. Choose the Best Platform for You

There are so many platforms to choose from (e.g., Wix, Shopify, Kajabi), so take the time to research and find one that fits your needs. Look at factors like:

  • Price: can you afford it now and in the long term?
  • Features: will it grow with you as your business expands?
  • Investment: does setting up require a significant investment of time and money?
  • Drawbacks: are there any significant downsides that could limit your plans?

Use resources like Google, blog posts, and articles on the platforms' websites, and ask around in FB groups to get real-world opinions from others.

5. Use the Available Support

You're not alone in this! Most website platforms have extensive support options, including email helplines, Facebook groups, YouTube tutorials, and articles on platform websites. Take advantage of these resources when you get stuck, and don't hesitate to ask for help.

6. Plan Out Your Website Pages

Before you start building, work out which pages you need. Here's an essential list to get you started:

  • Home Page: your site's first impression.
  • About Page: share your story and connect with your audience.
  • Contact Page: make it easy for visitors to reach you.
  • 404 Page: the page shown if a visitor lands on a broken link.
  • Blog Page: if you plan to share articles.
  • Legal Pages: privacy policy, terms and conditions, etc.
  • Landing Pages: dedicated pages for special offers or events.
  • Thank You Pages: redirect visitors after completing a form or signing up.
  • Bio-Link Pages: if you're directing traffic from social media.

7. Set Up Forms

You'll want to capture visitor information to build your email list. Start with forms for:

  • Contact form: so visitors can reach out to you.
  • Newsletter sign-up form: to start building your email list.
  • Freebie form: offer a downloadable resource in exchange for an email address.

8. Prepare Your Email Sequences

An essential part of growing your business is following up with your audience. Plan out your email sequences to nurture leads, introduce them to your services, and provide ongoing value.

9. Get Your Legal Pages in Place

Remember the legal side of things! You'll need proper legal pages such as privacy policy, terms and conditions, and disclaimers. Legal policies protect your business and help build trust with your audience.

10. Invest in High-Quality Photos

Images make a huge difference in how your website looks and feels. Invest in some high-quality photos that align with your brand. These can be of yourself, your products, or stock images representing your message.
