Make Offers to Make Sales
Apr 07, 2024
Today, in 3 minutes or less, you'll learn:
- There are so many ways to make money online if you make offers and overdeliver for your customers.
- Mums have fantastic opportunities to work from home on their passion projects.
- How to think outside the square to create value for your customers.
In today's newsletter, I want to focus on creating offers your customers will love and making money in your business. There are many examples of women working in their businesses but not making any money. They spend so much time producing content, engaging on social media, and doing busy work, but they need more sales. This does not need to be the case for you, and there are so many ways to make money online.
I want to focus this discussion on a business that solves this dilemma well. The business is 'By Liv', an earring retailer who sells beautifully designed earrings she has hand-painted and made in her Warrnambool studio. The owner, Liv, supported by her husband Jason, worked as a midwife when she decided she wanted to stay home with her two babies. So By Liv was born. She spent a lot of time selling her earrings at markets in Victoria. As her children got older and as having a more stable and reliable income became important, she focused more on selling online so she could stay at home.
I have been following Liv's story for some time after discovering her business on social media and purchasing some of her beautiful earrings. Liv does an amazing job selling her products and engaging with her customers. There is much to be gained from researching what others are doing and paying attention to what makes them successful. Here are the three key lessons I have learnt from Liv:
# Lesson 1: Create offers and create value
Liv could just sell a range of earrings online in a Shopify store and include her contact details. But instead, she offers so much more, including:
- Beautiful product ranges: this includes an affirmation 'I am Statement' collection, teacher presents, a Christmas range, and a range for teenagers.
- By Liv has unique limited-time collaborations with other artists and designers that produce one-off and sought-after earrings.
- There is also the option of a monthly mystery subscription box: customers receive high-value earrings each month, free postage, free bonus gifts, and 15% off storewide on other purchases.
- By Liv offers fundraising options for schools and other community organisations to sell her earrings and earn a % of total sales.
- Affiliate program: customers can earn a 10% commission on sales where they recommend By Liv.
- Loyalty program: customers earn points based on their purchases, which can be redeemed on future purchases.
- Customers can enquire about individual custom pieces being made to order.
- Customers can sign up for a VIP list and get a free pair of earrings, exclusive giveaways and promotions, a first look at new releases and a birthday gift.
- By Liv also sells wholesale into shops with a special discount depending on the volume purchased.
Liv has created so many ways that customers can buy from her. Her monthly subscription boxes are a particularly clever way of securing more regular income for her business.
# Lesson 2: Create an experience for your customers, even when selling products
Liv is very focused on giving women experiences when purchasing her products. She encourages customers to treat themselves by buying a gift for themselves. Liv's products are sent in beautiful packaging, including a personal note and a tea bag (see photo below), encouraging customers to create a moment for themselves. The monthly subscription box encourages customers to do this more regularly and was particularly popular during the pandemic when everyone was having such a difficult time. Imagine how nice it would have been to have such a unique package arrive to break up your day during all the lockdowns, particularly in Victoria.
# Lesson 3: Make it easy to make a purchase
I found it very easy to make my earring purchase. Liv's website is easy to navigate around and beautifully presented. Free shipping is offered for orders over $75. There is the option of buying gift vouchers, and I also noticed that you could directly deposit money into her bank account if you don't want to use your credit card online. An online chat bot with instant answers to frequently asked questions was also set up on her website. She also has a contact form, which she responds to within 48 business hours.
Obviously, Liv has spent a lot of time evolving her business over time, given all the ways that she over-delivers. She is very customer-focused and has created so many ways for her customers to be excited by her creations.
I encourage you to look at some of the businesses you purchase from, like I have. What offers are they making? How are they creating value and over-delivering for their customers? How are they ensuring the purchase process runs smoothly?
