Is Your Business Running You?
Dec 08, 2024
Today, in 4 minutes or less, you'll learn:
- Create a 5-minute shutdown ritual to end your workday: check final emails, list tomorrow's priorities, and physically close your laptop.
- Use technology to work smarter - set up email scheduling, social media automation, and client workflows to keep your business running while offline.
- Set clear boundaries with dedicated work hours, notification controls, and non-negotiable break times for family and self-care to prevent burnout.
As we move through the busyness of the 'silly season', a newsletter about finding balance and looking after yourself is timely. Running a business can be all-consuming, especially when balancing it with family life. But it doesn't have to be!
Setting clear boundaries isn't just good for your productivity—it's essential for your well-being. Here are some strategies to help you disconnect, recharge, and keep burnout at bay.
#1 Establish an End-of-Day Routine
A consistent end-of-day routine can be a powerful way to signal that it's time to step away from work. Take 5-10 minutes to tie up loose ends: respond to any final emails, check off your to-do list, and plan tomorrow's top priorities. Then, shut down your computer, clear your workspace, and let yourself mentally "clock out." I like to close the door to my office and change into some comfy clothing as part of my end-of-day ritual.
#2 Use Schedulers and Automation
Automation can be a lifesaver for managing tasks without constantly being "on". Tools like email schedulers (I love Gmail for this), social media planners (Canva and Tailwind are great), and automated workflows (Kajabi handles a lot of this for me) allow you to stay connected with your audience without being online all day. Scheduling posts or emails in advance means that your business can run smoothly, even when you're offline.
#3 Set Work Hours and Stick to Them
One of the benefits of running your own business is the flexibility to set work hours that work best for you. Choose hours that align with your family's routine and communicate these boundaries with clients and family members. When work hours end, close your laptop and leave your workspace—physically stepping away and not going back into your office can help you mentally disconnect, too.
#4 Be Realistic About What You Can Achieve
It's easy to pile too much onto your to-do list, especially if you're passionate about your business. However, realistic goals reduce stress and prevent you from constantly needing to catch up. Focus on the essentials and remember that your business can grow sustainably without overloading yourself.
#5 Turn Off Notifications Outside of Work Hours
Constant notifications can make it hard to unwind fully. Consider setting your phone to 'Do Not Disturb' mode after work hours or turning off notifications for emails and social media (I am big on this!!). This action can create a clear boundary between work and personal time, allowing you to be present with family or engage in activities you enjoy.
#6 Schedule Self-Care and Family Time
Blocking out time for self-care and family in your calendar can be a game-changer. Whether it's a morning walk, a family game night, or a few minutes of quiet reading time, these small pockets of time add up. Treat these appointments with the same respect as business meetings—they're essential for your well-being and help you recharge for work.
Switching off from your business can feel challenging, especially in the early days. But by building these boundaries and routines, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a thriving business and a balanced life. I recommend starting with the 'shutdown ritual'- it's quick, simple, and makes such a difference!
Remember: Your business won't fall apart if you take time off. In fact, you'll return more creative, energised, and ready to serve your clients even better!
