I Didn't Send my Newsletter and the World Didn't End

mindset being kind managing your mind

Today, in two minutes or less, you’ll learn about a dilemma I had in my business, the choice I made to support myself, and what I learned from this.

This week, I did not get my newsletter out. It was the first newsletter I had not sent in 104 issues. I didn't realise that until I looked it up for this blog post. It was my second-anniversary issue! I didn't have it ready to send and missed my Monday morning delivery to my audience.

There was so much in this. I had a big week, and a lot was happening with my work and life. I kept trying to get to my newsletter. I had a good outline in place for it. But I left finalising it until Sunday night. By then, I was too tired to look at it. All the coaches I have worked with and follow have drilled into me that you need to do what you promise. My audience need to be able to rely on me if they will trust me enough to want to work with me. But I was too tired. I wanted to rest, spend time with my husband, and prepare for work the next day. I am not a robot, and I decided not to push myself this time. I chose to be kind to myself and let this one go.

I have had so many thoughts about this.

  • Two days later, I sat down and wrote the newsletter in a focused 30 minutes. Did I make too big a deal of the newsletter on Sunday night? Could I have quickly finished it? Was it that I was working in the morning instead of trying to squeeze it in late at night?
  • The world didn't end when the newsletter didn't go out. No one contacted me about it. Everyone is busy, too, with a lot going on.
  • I need rest, too. As a busy mama, I can't rely on the last minute to finish things. It's too much pressure.
  • I need to stop putting off the hard things in my week. Or did I build this up to be problematic when it wasn't? I enjoy the writing and sharing process when I sit down and start.
  • I didn't like the feeling of not sending it out and letting my audience down. I felt unsettled at 7 a.m. on Monday when my newsletter was due to go out. Sometimes, the falling down and the failures help you step back and reflect to put better and more supportive plans in place.
  • How can I get ahead on my newsletters? I need to schedule four or five, so it doesn't matter what happens during my week. I have looked after my future self earlier, and this task is taken care of.
  • Am I trying to make my content too perfect? Is consistency more important rather than aiming for a perfect newsletter? Can I make them shorter, more to the point, and easier to read? I'm sure my audience will appreciate this, too, given how busy they are in their own lives.

I am sharing this with you in case you face a similar dilemma. Keep trying to figure it out the best you can. I, like you, need to find a way to manage ALL of my thoughts about my actions to achieve my desired results. The better we manage our minds, the more successful we will be.

Just keep doing the best you can and be kind to yourself. It's a long journey, and it is all about the learning and growth you experience along the way.
