- Tips for setting up a basic system to track your key business metrics.
- Understanding and analysing performance metrics can empower you to make informed business decisions and celebrate meaningful progress.
So, you've launched your amazing business, and now you're wondering, "Am I actually crushing it, or just feeling crushed?" You're not alone! Tracking your business metrics can feel daunting—it might seem overwhelming and messy, and it is hard to work out where to start. But without these numbers, it's like driving your business blindfolded!
So today, I'm sharing my top five tips for measuring and evaluating performance. Let's get started.
# Tip 1 – Decide on Important Metrics for Your Business
I encourage you to start by tracking the numbers that mean something for YOUR business. It's not about tracking everything but honing in on the metrics that help you make sound decisions and celebrate your wins.
Here are some key metrics to consider:
- Content Data: impressions, engagement, click-throughs
- Website Analytics Data: number of visits, where are they from, how long do they stay, how often do they leave
- Profitability: revenue, expenses, and profit
- Conversions: number of programs/products/services sold, conversion rates, etc.
- Traffic: socials, website visits, email clicks
- Email Subscriptions: focus on quality and relevance
- Lead Magnet Opt-ins
- Socials Followers: nice to track but doesn't always equal profit
# Tip 2 – Set Up a System for Tracking Data
Create a system to keep track of your data. I recommend starting with a basic Excel spreadsheet, such as this (note you may wish to record your data more frequently than monthly):
Record your data regularly to observe trends over time. Begin with high-level numbers and then dig deeper as you become more comfortable.
You can draw on data from a combination of the following:
- Dashboards and tools from the platform you are using (Kajabi in my case)
- Google Analytics
- Social media account insights
- Accounting software
- PayPal and Stripe accounts
- Shield Analytics for Linked In
- Fathom Analytics
# Tip 3 – Reflect on What You Find
Once you have your data, it's time to reflect! This reflection provides insights into what drives success or poor performance, allowing you to make necessary tweaks.
Your reflection should assist you to:
- Run Experiments: test and analyse data
- Track Progress: ensure you're on track
- Make Yourself Accountable: set and achieve goals
- Celebrate Achievements: observe growth and celebrate wins
Regular reviews help you see where the gaps are and what changes might be needed before making significant shifts.
# Tip 4 – Ditch the Drama
Focus on how the data can help you rather than being hard on yourself if your results are not where you had hoped. Use feedback constructively and start making tweaks. If things need to be revised, consider it an opportunity to rise to the challenge and adjust your approach.
# Tip 5 – Celebrate Your Wins
Remember to celebrate your successes. Create a Trello board to record and showcase your achievements. Include milestone sales figures, subscriber numbers, client notes, launch photos, and positive reviews. This visual reminder will keep you motivated and inspired!
Remember, tracking your metrics isn't about stressing over every detail but gaining the insight needed to drive your business forward. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll be well on your way to celebrating more and stressing less.
