There are so many ways to make money online as I write this newsletter. The barriers to entry are so low, and technology has opened up so many opportunities that previous generations could have only dreamed of. Even in the past few years, the pandemic forced a whole new level of investment in creating opportunities to work and generate an income online.
In this newsletter, I want to share some key ways I believe mums can get started in online business. The list the follows can be particularly helpful for you, alongside the following key considerations:
- What have you done professionally, and what is your current skill base?
- What do you love?
- What are you good at?
#1 Selling physical products
There are many opportunities to sell products, including jewellery, art, clothing, baby products, handmade crafts, fashion accessories, beauty products, or eco-friendly goods. Platforms like Shopify, Etsy, or Amazon can facilitate this.
Consider creating and selling subscription boxes containing curated products tailored to a specific audience's interests, such as beauty products, snacks, books, or stationery.
Another option is setting up a drop shipping store where you sell products to customers, but the products are shipped directly from the manufacturer or wholesaler. Platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce integrated with drop shipping apps can facilitate this business model.
#2 Selling services
Many services can be delivered online, including coaching, virtual assistant, health and fitness, wedding planning, counselling, consulting, social media and marketing, web design, accounting, teaching a course, video production, travel planning, tutoring and translating. Platforms like Zoom, Skype, or online tutoring marketplaces all help facilitate this.
#3 Sponsorship/Influencing
Sponsorship is where a company pays you to talk about or show something (through your marketing channels). You can build a solid online presence on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube and collaborate with brands for sponsored content, product promotions, or affiliate marketing partnerships.
#4 Advertising on site/blog/podcast
Start a blog, YouTube channel, or podcast focused on a niche topic and monetise through advertising, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, or selling digital products. Platforms like WordPress, YouTube, or Kartra can facilitate content creation and monetisation.
#5 Affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing is where you gain commission for selling someone else's products and services. You can promote other companies' products or services through affiliate marketing programs and earn commissions on sales from your unique affiliate links. Websites like Amazon Associates, ShareASale, or ClickBank offer affiliate marketing opportunities.
#6 Memberships
Memberships are a fantastic way to create an online community focused on a similar interest, including recipes, fitness, personal development and group coaching.
#7 Digital products
Create and sell digital products such as eBooks, printables, templates, stock photos, software, audio, planners, stationery, or digital artwork through your website, Etsy, or other digital marketplaces.
#8 Online Courses and Coaching
Create and sell online courses or coaching programs in areas where you have expertise, such as personal development, fitness, nutrition, career advancement, or entrepreneurship. Platforms like Teachable, Kajabi or Udemy can help with course creation and sales.
#9 Freelancing
You can provide freelance services such as graphic design, writing and editing, social media management, virtual assistance, or web development through Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer. Sites like Motherly and Mamamia will also pay you for high-quality content they can share with their audience.
#10 Live events and Virtual Event Planning and Management
Using platforms like Zoom, Eventbrite, or Hopin, you can also offer virtual event planning and management services for corporate events, webinars, conferences, or online summits. Or deliver live workshops, training, lectures or courses yourself to an audience.
Of course, this list will continue, and we are all just waiting for the next online opportunity.
While exploring what opportunities will work best for you, I also encourage you to consider your ideal client and her needs. Following your interests and skills is essential, but you need to ensure you will have a client who is willing, excited and able to buy from you. What are her problems? What solution does she need? How does she want it delivered? How much time can she give it? What results does she want?
